Mars Landing
Noel Bullock – 2014
In Bullock’s Mars Landing, photographs and sculpture address such symbolic terrain, material transformation and use-value.
Noel Bullock’s exhibition Mars Landing is informed by the landscape, both earthbound and interstellar. As the Planetary Society notes, “Mars has historically been unfriendly to Earth’s attempts to visit it.” Missions have been attempted, and half have failed. However, since 1996 there has been a resurgence in activity, with 3-D data from high-resolution scans and mechanical rovers seeking out a safe and precise landing spot. There will perhaps be a city at some point in time, waiting for us. In Bullock’s Mars Landing, photographs and sculpture address such symbolic terrain, material transformation and use-value. It is indicative of his shifting art practice informed by earth works/land art from the 1970s, land design and closed, prepackaged systems.
