Edgewise
Ann Clark – 2012
Opaque and transparent images are layered, and reflections on the dichotomies of nature/nurture, sacred/profane, organic/manufactured, past/present, and wild/tame, are explored.
Modern Fuel presents, in its State of Flux Gallery, a new installation of paintings by Ann Clarke (Thunder Bay, ON) entitled Edgewise. The focus of her current work is painting as painting, the picture plane, space and colour. Opaque and transparent images are layered, and reflections on the dichotomies of nature/nurture, sacred/profane, organic/manufactured, past/present, and wild/tame, are explored. Memory and cross-cultural influences also play a significant role. The contrast between flatness and the illusion of space and volume holds her attention as an essential aspect of two-dimensional work. The journey is along the edge, the shoreline, the border between order and chaos.
