Silent Movie

Aida Sulcs – 2018

Featuring large-scale drawings in our State of Flux Gallery and video work in our New Media Workspace, Silent Movie reflects on forms of understanding and empathy, where the act of mark-making can itself contribute to these continually unfolding processes.

Artist Statement

I am interested in the space between experience and reaction, how we process emotion and develop communication. As a multi-disciplinary artist-in-education I observe the power of mark-making as a communicative tool in self-awareness and communication. The drawing and video clips of this presentation speak to my interest in the interrelation between the energy that we are and the gestures we perform.

About the Artist

Aida Sulcs

Aida was born in England of Latvian refugee parents who emigrated to Hamilton, Ontario in a post war boom. She studied fine art at Queen’s University, University of Guelph and Selkirk College and came of age paying attention to the performative art of Yves Klein and Yoko Ono and the literary scene of Gwendolyn McEwen’s Toronto Island. She is currently inspired by the work of Katie Belcher (Halifax), Mary Kavanagh (Lethbridge), Jacynthe Carrier (Quebec City), Meryl McMaster (Ottawa) and Katie Lyle (Toronto).
