Square Pegs 1
Modern Fuel and Downtown Kingston present:
SQUARE PEGS: Video Art in the Square
Date: Wednesday August 13, 2008
Time: Dusk
Place: Courtyard at Market Square, Market Street, Market Square, Kingston, ON.
In collaboration with Downtown Kingston, Modern Fuel Artist-Run Centre is presenting, in the courtyard of the Market Square, an exciting program of short, experimental videos by local, national, and international artists.
The program offers an eclectic mix of manipulated imagery and offbeat music videos, anchored by a project involving the female inmates of the Isabel MacNeil House by artist-facilitator Jessica MacCormack. In August 2007, MacCormack met regularly with the women and led various painting and drawing classes, intending to eventually create an animation with the works produced (no cameras are allowed in the facility). The final animation, set to the music of singer/songwriter Rae Spoon, has already been screened for the participating women who each received a copy of the DVD. With “Square Pegs,” MacCormack’s video gets its public premiere in Kingston.

Square Pegs 3
August 18th at Dusk, Amphitheater at Market Square!
Modern Fuel Artist-Run Centre, in association with Downtown Kingston, is excited to present Square Pegs 3, our third annual free screening of video art in Kingston’s Market Square. The program showcases the short experimental works of ten talented Canadian video artists and filmmakers, including Kingston’s Blake MacFarlane, Jocelyn Purdie, and Maayke Schurer.
The screening will take place in the amphitheatre at Market Square, which is located at the southeast corner of King and Brock. The show will begin at dusk (approximately 8:30 PM) on Wednesday, August 18th, 2010, and attendees are encouraged to come out early to visit community group booths that will be set up for the evening. The program will feature an eclectic and provocative array of artistic approaches and subject matter. Produced during Modern Fuel’s High Octane Video Production Residency held for the first time this summer, Jocelyn Purdie’s video continues to explore the themes first broached in her work Habitus, a photographic essay on the duck blinds of Wolfe Island. Montreal’s Eugenie Cliché describes her submission, Symphonie sur un meme souffle, as a “no-holds-barred videographic world.” Her film centres on a wedding ceremony, ordained by a Mickey Mouse-like priest. Other videos deliver suspense, intrigue and the absurd. The screening is approximately 60 minutes long, and aims to promote Canadian experimental film and video, as well as Modern Fuel’s New Media Workspace, an equipment and training resource for aspiring video artists in Kingston. This is a great opportunity to come out and support local and national video artists. Square Pegs 3 has been made possible as a result of the enthusiastic support of Downtown Kingston.

Square Pegs 4
Modern Fuel Artist-Run Centre, in association with Downtown Kingston, is excited to present Square Pegs 4, our fourth annual free screening of video art in Kingston’s Market Square. The program showcases the short experimental works of eleven talented Canadian video artists and filmmakers, including Kingston’s Maayke Schurer and Rebecca Anweiler. The screening will take place in the amphitheatre at Market Square, which is located at the southeast corner of King and Brock. The show will begin at dusk (approximately 8:30 PM) on Wednesday, August 17th, 2011. The program will feature an eclectic and provocative array of artistic approaches and subject matter. Produced during Modern Fuel’s High Octane Video Production Residency that was held for the second time this summer, Rebecca Anweiler’s video explores the temporary, fragmented nature of youth as her video is composed of a series of snapshots, capturing the pure yet fleeting moments of childhood. From Moffat, Ontario, Susan Detwiler brings “Dogswalkme,” a mystical maneuver through the woods using basic head-cam technology. Fallow fields, farm dumpsites and maple bush are some of the images that appear in this multi-perspective voyage that captures a unique interaction between artist, dog and landscape. The screening is approximately 60 minutes long, and aims to promote Canadian experimental film and video, as well as Modern Fuel’s New Media Workspace, an equipment and training resource for aspiring video artists in Kingston. This is a great opportunity to come out and support local and national video artists. Square Pegs 4 has been made possible as a result of the enthusiastic support of Downtown Kingston.

Square Pegs V
Wednesday, August 15, 2012
Time: Dusk (approximately 8:30pm)
Place: Amphitheatre, Springer Market Square, Kingston, ON. Admission: FREE!
Modern Fuel Artist-Run Centre, in association with Downtown Kingston, is excited to present Square Pegs V, our fifth annual free screening of video art in Kingston’s Market Square. We have teamed up with the AKA Gallery in Saskatoon for an East/West connection. The program showcases the short experimental works of twelve talented Canadian video artists and filmmakers from Eastern Ontario, including Kingston local talent, as well as the Prairies.
This is a special year for Square Pegs, as AKA and Modern Fuel have partnered to exhibit the experimental vanguard of film and video. AKA is contributing a selection of works from the Prairies and Modern Fuel is showcasing work from Kingston and Eastern Ontario. There will be a second screening of the program later this year in Saskatoon.
For the third year, Modern Fuel ran its High Octane Video Production Residency, during which Modern Fuel donates the video equipment from its New Media Workspace in order to help create a local work for Square Pegs. This year James Greatrex was awarded the residency, and his video “Discoverer,” featured in Square Pegs, explores a surreal look on a childhood experience that voyages into space and time warps.
Other local video artists in the program include Julia Krolik and Owen Fernley, whose “88 Years” offers a portrait of our community through a piano keyboard. From out West, AKA has selected notable filmmakers such as the Sobey Art Award nominee Amalie Atkins and established video artist Erica Eyres. The resulting program promises to make this Square Pegs the most exciting yet.
The screening is approximately 60 minutes long, and aims to promote Canadian experimental film and video, as well as Modern Fuel’s New Media Workspace, an equipment and training resource for aspiring video artists in Kingston. This is a great opportunity to come out and support local and national video artists.
Square Pegs V has been made possible as a result of the enthusiastic support of Downtown Kingston and a major contribution from the Community Foundation for Kingston and Area. As well, Modern Fuel would like to thank 98.9 the Drive and Tourism Kingston for their invaluable support. Of course, we can’t forget our food sponsor, the Limestone City Cupcakery, who will be rolling out some special new treats at the event, in addition to their usual delicious cupcakes, smoothies, and Italian sodas. Square Pegs V will be the coolest summer night in Kingston.
Thanks to some amazing sponsors for helping make this event so great!
