Sapsucker Sounds

Annie Dunning – 2014

“In her new exhibition Sapsucker Sounds, an installation of objects and interactive sound sculptures offers an opportunity to experience sound generated by a conflation of human and woodpecker culture. “

Artist Annie Dunning takes a playful approach to nature and mystery. A curiosity for the overlooked and unconsidered leads her to deal with mostly common items as subject matter. With an aesthetic that is influenced by craft and DIY style, Dunning explores what greater possibilities common subjects might hold if released from their expected roles.

In her new exhibition Sapsucker Sounds, an installation of objects and interactive sound sculptures offers an opportunity to experience sound generated by a conflation of human and woodpecker culture. These are sculptures that attempt to translate the bird’s mark making into a new physical form, including a cluster of small objects that explores the physical form of a bird’s excavation through a series of inversions required by the casting process. Sapsucker Sounds is an eloquent intersection of culture and the natural world, and an example of Dunning’s deft material processes.
