Soleil

Lorna Bauer – 2015

“The works presented in Lorna Bauer’s exhibition Soleil were made during a recent residency in Paris. The artist documented daily moments experienced in the city mostly using a 35mm camera, and the resulting images speak to ideas around consumption, co-habitation, urban development and tourism. In turn, they begin to act as a connective tissue in order for relationships and narratives to emerge.”

Many of Bauer’s artworks begin out of an interest in the architecture, the modern urban plan, or the personal histories of a particular place. Large format prints of an old tattered awning–a reoccurring motif in this exhibition–punctuate the gallery space and become a backdrop for other works. The awning fabric was scanned and then printed on newsprint, an inexpensive material that easily turns yellow in the sun and which is most often associated with the daily newspaper. The awning may refer to the changing economy of the shop front, including the textile industry (which as since moved offshore) for which the Paris arcades were largely built up around in the beginning of the 19th century.

By layering these concepts, spaces and histories onto one another, Bauer’s fragmented images are removed from their original sites. These photographs offer visual juxtapositions and complex rhythms on a temporal register that is meant to break up the logic of a static series.
